Satz's Chapter 5

  1. As Chief Buffalo, Benjamin Armstrong, and other Indians traveled east to Washington to delegate their petition, how did residents of near-by Lake Superior towns react to the petition and why did they feel this way?
  1. What do you think some of the reasons were that President Fillmore helped the Chippewas and other Indian tribes located in other states or territories?
  1. How did Lapham, Blossom, and Dousman react to the undermining of Chippewa unsufructuary rights?
  1. Were there any “hidden” reasons that federal administrations kept putting off the overdue payments to the Indians?
  1. Who do you think that the Dawes Severalty Act of 1887 benefited more, Indians or non-Indians?
  1. Tourism increased dramatically in the early 1900s, and with this came competition with the Indians of wild game and fish.  So did tourism have any positive affects on Indians, or were they all negative?
