NewerNewerNewerDecember 4, 2007 NewerNewerNewer -- The link to the "R Compendium" document worked irregularly due to server behaviour, so I changed it to another format. The Compendium is available from the link for Week 2 of the Lab, or from the Sept. 6 date on the Syllabus page. Please let me know soon if you intend to do an extra-credit R function for the compendium.

flshNovember 27, 2007Newer --  Welcome back from Thanksgiving break. I promised a couple of weeks ago to give you a reference to a recent revision of Andres von Brandt's "Fish Catching Methods of the World". This is an edited revision of the original 1964 book that FAO sponsored. It is a wonderful survey of the art and craft of fishing methods. Almost any fisheries biologist would want to add this to her/his Christmas list:  Gabriel, O., K. Lange, E. Dahn and T. Wendt [eds.]. 2005. Fish Catching Methods of the World. Blackwell Publishing, Ltd., Oxford, UK. 523 pages.

Here's Amazon's listing: Fish Catching Methods of the World (Hardcover)
by Otto Gabriel (Author), Klaus Lange (Author), Erdmann Dahm (Author), Thomas Wendt (Author) Key Phrases: Fish Catching Methods of the World, Black Sea, New Zealand (more...)

Newer October 18, 2007 Newer Because of jury duty next week, we will not meet in lecture Oct. 23. Your take-home exams will be distributed to you (MSWord or PDF files) by email on Monday, Oct. 22. Please print them out and hand-write your answers to the questions. They are due at the beginning of the lecture hour on October 30, 2007. The lab schedule has also been revised, please check this page frequently for any developing news related to my term of jury duty.

Newer September 24, 2007 Newer -- Note that the syllabus no longer announces a "Quiz" on September 25. That purpose was served by having the take-home quiz that you turned in last week.  Note also that John Verzani's "Simple R" pdf file is accessible to you as a resource for further understanding the R programming environment. That file ( RSRCS/PDF Notes/Verzani-SimpleR .pdf ) is available for download on the internet, so using the local copy will not violate copyright, and, you are welcome to visit John Verzani's website (Google it) to download a personal copy.

September 6, 2007 Newer --  As promised in class today, the details of the NOAA winter workshop in Florida are as follows:

All-Expenses-Paid NOAA Winter Workshop in Florida for Undergraduate Students

Announcing the Fifth Annual

MARINE RESOURCES POPULATION DYNAMICS WORKSHOP

January 5-11, 2008

Summerland Key, Florida

All expenses paid for the 15 undergraduate students selected to participate.

Sponsored by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Fisheries Service and Virginia Tech.

Do you like math and receive A's in your math courses? Do you have a basic understanding of ecology? Do you want to play an important role in the conservation and management of our environment and natural resources? If so, the field of population dynamics may be right for you.

In the past four years, 61 students representing 38 colleges and universities in 20 states have participated in this workshop. All 61 replied that they would recommend this workshop to others and 80% of the participants agreed that they had developed a betters sense of what they would like to do for a career because of the workshop.

For more information and to find application materials, visit our website at: http://www.nmfs.vt.edu/workshops.htm

Applications are due on October 1st, 2007. (Please note that this year's deadline is one month earlier than previous years.)
