Research

This page presents some examples of the research currently underway by faculty and graduate students in our department. For additional information about current research, please contact the individuals involved. Topics and active projects change throughout the year, so please come back often.

  • Biochronology Laboratory - Histories of the aquatic environment written by the fish themselves in their own bones and otoliths.
  • Ecosystems and Applied Ecology - Interdisciplinary research in wildlife conservation, ecology and computer science.
  • Exotic Species - Eurasian watermilfoil, sea lampreys, and ruffe are some of the aquatic species currently under study.
  • Fish Physiology - Chemosensory biology of ruffe, lamprey, and goldfish lead to an understanding of pheromone communication among fish. Understanding how nutrition affects fish reproduction is also important.
  • International Wildlife Conservation - Tigers in Nepal and sloth bears on the Indian subcontinent provide challenges for the conservation biology of large vertebrates.
  • Spotted Owls - Research on spotted owls and ruffed grouse helps provide the scientific basis for management of these species.
  • Understanding the link between citizen science and empowerment of local watershed groups
