This is the interior region of a Freshwater Drum otolith from a 71 yr-old specimen captured in the Red Lakes, Minnesota in 1949.

Annuli from the 16th to 71st years are apparent here with very little "age effect." Almost all of the variation in growth in this region of the otolith is due to between-years variation in environmental conditions experienced by the fish.
